History
Stroud & Swindon Building Society was originally established in 1850 as the Stroud Provident Benefit Building Society. The first head office was in Rowcroft in Stroud. After transferring for a period to larger premises in Russell Street, the Society moved in 1990 to its current purpose built head office, less than 200 metres from its original location.
Over the years a series of acquisitions of other societies including the Bristol Permanent Building Society and the Frome and Selwood Building Society saw Stroud Building Society grow and develop. Merger with Swindon Permanent Building Society led to the creation of Stroud & Swindon Building Society in 1986.
Stroud & Swindon Building Society continued to grow and by 2009 had become the UK's tenth largest building society with assets of £2.7 billion.
On 1st September 2010, Stroud & Swindon Building Society merged with Coventry Building Society, the UK's third largest building society. The combined society has 92 branches and agencies across the Midlands and South-West, and offers a wide-range of financial products to a national membership through internet, telephone, postal and intermediary services.
